Sailing through the Polar Convergence to South Georgia feels like travelling through some kind of portal to a different world. The climate split between the waters of the South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean often brings fog. The fog, in fact, is welcome. It veils the island with a sense of mystery.
We have been at sea for three days now, three days to prepare ourselves for what promises to be an amazing experience. As we sail closer to the island, we have begun to see mats of kelp floating in the surprisingly calm waters around the vessel. Then, a fur seal. Suddenly, a king penguin. Promises, promises.
When we arrive in South Georgia we will hit the ground running, with little time for presentations other than our wonderful recaps at the end of what will no doubt be long days. Therefore, the past days have been filled with educational content (both historical and ecological) preparing our guests so that they can arrive fully loaded with facts and figures, ready for the experience of a lifetime.
