National Geographic Quest was anchored next to Barro Colorado Island, a lush tropical rainforest that covers the entire island and could be seen by our guests from the bow of the ship. Since the 1920s, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute has conducted a variety of research throughout the area.

A group of our guests had the opportunity to go ashore and explore the trails that the scientists use for their research. Another group went to the midpoint of the Panama Canal and explored the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center. It was a morning loaded with wildlife sightings and learning about the dynamics of the tropical rainforest.

After lunch, we had another opportunity to explore other areas of Gatun Lake. We cruised around several small islands that used to be hills before the lake was created. The sightings of different species of birds and primates were enjoyed by all.

We returned onboard and gathered on the sundeck to share our thoughts about all we had seen during the day. As the sun began to set, we patiently waited for the pilot of the Panama Canal Authority to complete our transit through the Panama Canal.
