We explored this place early in the morning before breakfast. After few minutes, one of our guides spotted a dozen red bellied macaws flying. We continued searching the forest until we spotted a group of yellow breasted macaws fighting above the canopy. Not too far from there, in a rotten trunk resting beneath the shade of a massive tree, a small troop of owl monkeys were curious about us.
Onboard, our galley staff prepared a great breakfast to give us the energy to continue shortly after. We spotted several vultures and black collared hawks resting on the top of the canopy; everywhere you look there is life in different forms, colors and sounds.
In the afternoon we navigated to “El Dorado River” a small tributary of the main river, Ucayali. We explore the area via skiffs, a great way to search for wildlife since the very skillful drivers can enter very narrow coves and creeks we wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Pink and grey dolphins were spotted right around some partially submerged branches, they seemed to be performing some kind of game swimming circles and blowing bubbles and taking turns doing it. In any case, we were thrilled to see such a show right before our eyes.
As we continued our exploration along “El Dorado River” the landscape changed quite significantly, for the surface of the river banks were covered in giant lily pads in full bloom and hoatzins, somewhat prehistoric birds, nesting on dry branches above the water. To top it all off, as we came back to the ship the sky was painted in red, blue, and violet. One of the best sunsets of the trip so far.
