The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 1, 2017.

We greeted the day with a relaxed morning: a tour of the National Fine Arts Museum with works by Cuban artists in a variety of styles, a leisurely walk around the Cemeterio Cristobal Colon, an introduction to the history and stories of our Hotel Nacional, or simply a slow breakfast on the outdoor terrace. Then it was time to depart this fine city of rich character and see some more of the island.

Today marked a transition in our program, as we traveled to the Caribbean coast to join our home for the remainder of the week, the vessel Panorama II. Driving south and east along the Cuban National Highway, we passed through neighborhoods comprising the outskirts of Havana, areas dedicated to agriculture (mangos, bananas and sugar cane, among other crops), and small rural communities. As the landscape changed, so too grew our appreciation for the complexity of Cuban experience and lifestyle.

After lunch in the countryside, our local guides started preparing us for tomorrow’s stop at the Bay of Pigs with a short documentary and discussion introducing the occasion’s backstory and events. We soon arrived in Cienfuegos, and attended a performance by the exceptionally talented Cantores de Cienfuegos, a local choral group with powerful harmonies and a diverse repertoire. Panorama II awaited our arrival at the dock and our evening was filled with shipboard orientation, snorkel briefings, and a sunset dinner served on deck.
