Fall in the temperate rainforest brings with it low, even, overcast conditions on the water and a carpet of mushrooms on the forest floor.
After anchoring in Tenedos Bay, our hikes took us deep into this rainforest ecosystem revealing much of its fungal cornucopia. From coral fungus to turkey-tails to the often sought after chanterelles! Beyond this, a multitude of other fungal relatives lay at our feet and in our viewfinders. Here are a few gems from the day.

Today we arrived in Victoria, British Columbia to a beautiful sunrise. On the first full day of our voyage, we spent the whole day exploring this beautiful and historic city. There was a small rain shower in the morning, but it didn’t dampen our enthusiasm for adventure. There were many tour options led by local experts, including garden tours, foodie tours, historical walking tours, and a bike tour. Some guests also took the opportunity to explore Victoria on their own. The underwater team was able to dive on the Ogden Point Breakwater and had many beautiful pictures to share. After a full day exploring in Victoria, we were welcomed to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria for appetizers and a special look at the amazing local art. Many local artists were featured along with historic pieces. Victoria was a great way to start the voyage.
Our day began with a spectacular sunrise and concluded with a sunset just as incredible. In between, we spent the final day of our voyage weaving through the San Juan Islands. Along the way we managed to find several different types of marine mammals, including harbor porpoises, Steller sea lions, and harbor seals. Our travels concluded at the horseshoe-shaped Sucia Island. Comprised mostly of sandstone, the island served as the perfect platform for an array of activities, including kayaking, Zodiac cruising, and hiking. To cap it all off, National Geographic Venture ’s hotel staff treated us to a marvelous cocktail hour on the beach complete with s’mores and appetizers while the sun dipped beneath the Pacific and lit Mount Baker in a marvelous alpenglow. It’s hard to believe that our voyage ends tomorrow. Our week has been filled with all the cultural and wild treasures of the Pacific Northwest, and we’ll depart from Seattle tomorrow with plenty of stories and memories.
