“Good morning on National Geographic Sea Bird. If you look outside, you’ll see that it’s raining. The forecast for this morning is rain, and the forecast for this afternoon is rain…” Thus, we were greeted this morning by our expedition leader. The forecast did not disappoint. We ventured out anyway to view wildlife and explore Washington State’s Friday Harbor. In 1859, an American farmer on San Juan Island shot and killed a large pig in his garden. The incident evolved into military escalation between the United States and Great Britain, and after this bloodless war, the San Juan Islands were awarded to the U.S.
