Supay & Flor de Castaña, Rio Ucayali
The last full day of this expedition in the Peruvian Amazon was a full one. We took advantage of the fine weather at Supay this morning to get out on the water in skiffs and kayaks and in the water for those who chose the total immersion of another swim.
During our time here we have been able to explore a diversity of habitats associated with the river and the flooded forest. No two locations, while variations on a theme, are quite the same. And our afternoon skiff outing today took us to a location quite unlike any other we have explored this week. While we have previously been to this part of the river, the size of the location and the number of waterways available to us at this time of year means that there is always further to go and more to see.
We took advantage of the extra time in the area of Flor de Castaña to head deeper into the channels and reach an area of flooded forest where many of the trees have died off. We explored narrow channels pushing deeper into the black water backwaters, and with blue skies and puffy white clouds bubbling up, this glassy calm area produced some stunning vistas. Add to this a variety of bird species, in particular range of woodpecker species, and the last afternoon of this voyage proved to be a memorable one.
