Drake Passage

This morning, no land in sight, gray sea, gray sky, gray walls of fog, like long corridors with hidden doors. This morning’s uniformity is a striking contrast to the bold blacks and whites of Antarctica. However, it seems a proper transition back to the real world: gray, breathless and calm. It has been an exciting time, the Christmas of 2012!

In the water there has been an abundance of whales, in numbers and kind. The water itself has been close to crystal-clear; perhaps this is why we experienced so many instances of penguins following divers and Zodiacs. I have never seen anything like it!

It has been a playful time too, with singing, gift giving and story telling. And no one seemed surprised when Santa Claus made an appearance, even if he was going underwater!
