Floreana Island

Today, early in the morning we visited Punta Cormorant on the northern side of this central island. This is the breeding season for the Pacific green sea turtle in the Galápagos Islands, and it will go on for a couple of months more. Sea turtles are abundant in this region and many thousand nest on beaches throughout the islands.

Later on we disembarked for a Zodiac ride and snorkeling around a little island named Champion. During this Zodiac ride we saw a lot of seabirds such as the Nazca boobies, red billed tropic birds and the elusive Floreana mockingbird perching among the cactus trees. Snorkeling was outstanding; when we jumped off the Zodiac into the water we were surrounded by myriads of tropical fish, some small, some big and all of them fearless. Champion Island is home to a large colony of Nazca boobies, swallow tailed gulls and Galápagos sea lions. As we explored the place we had a great time playing with a group of baby sea lions.

In the afternoon we visited the legendary post office barrel located on the north side of Floreana. This place is legendary for its history. Back in the whaling times, hundreds of whaling ships visited Floreana for their supplies of fresh water and giant tortoises as well sheltered bays for maintaining their ships.

Some of our guests explored Post Office Bay from the Zodiacs and some of us explored the place from kayaks. As we explored the little coves we suddenly found a little offshore island full of sea lions of all sizes. But the icing on the cake was spotting a Galápagos penguin!

I can’t wait to do and see more!
