Bahia Loreto Marine Park & Isla Santa Catalina

We met this morning with a lovely dawn, sailing along the coast of Isla del Carmen. Even before breakfast we sighted our first marine mammal of the day: a blue whale, the largest living being on our planet! We followed the animal for some time, and then left it to its own program. Bottlenose dolphins made us even happier yet, as the water was so calm, we were able to see the animals under water, swimming next to the ship.

We had to leave these animals to their own schedule, as we still had to sail some distance to reach our afternoon destination: Isla Santa Catalina. Lunch happened in the meantime, and shortly thereafter we were anchoring off Roca Elefante, where we snorkeled to our heart’s content, enjoying the great aquatic life.

In the afternoon we hiked on the island, where great numbers of cardones and other species of cacti awaited our attention. Among the most startling were the giant barrel cacti, unique in the world. It was a great day!
