Sunrise and wake-up coincided this morning just below the Columbia River's John Day Dam. We arrived at The Dalles just after breakfast and disembarked for a morning of exploring the Columbia River Gorge. We almost couldn't believe our luck with blue skies above, Indian summer temperatures and bright fall foliage. The Gorge is a spectacular cleft in the Cascade Range that offers a dramatic demonstration of the transition between the dry, eastern side of the range and the lush temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest coast.

Just before sunset this evening we sailed past several of the waterfalls for which the Gorge is famous. The photo shows Multnomah Falls, at 630 feet the third highest cascade in North America.
