Winter rains have not come to the region yet, probably due to the "Ni¤a," following the "Ni¤o" of winter 1998-1999. El Carmen has quite a few endemic plants and animals, among them the El Carmen giant barrel cactus.

A group of guests walk along a dry arroyo on the island of El Carmen, in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The vegetation consists mostly of cacti, plus some riverine trees, like palo verde and palo blanco.
