The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 15, 2017.

After navigating 220 miles in a westerly direction from Cienfuegos, coasting the Canarreos Archipelago, we spent a day exploring the Isla of Youth (formerly Isle of Pines). We drove across the countryside to the famous Presidio Modelo, where Fidel and other revolutionaries were held prisoners after the attack on the Moncada Barracks. We then continued on to the beautiful but as yet rarely visited town of Nueva Gerona, paved in multicolored marble from local quarries and inhabited by the friendliest people one can imagine, who offered us all unique people-to-people experiences. We visited a local school for the arts where students were as curious about us as we about them and then wandered the pedestrian streets before enjoying an exquisite lunch. We even had time for a stop at a hotel built by the mafia in the 1950s, where we could swim over seagrass beds and have cocktails by the pool.
