The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 22, 2017.

Today we spent the full day aboard Panorama II sailing west after departing the port of Casilda last night bound for Isla de la Juventud, off the southern coast of Cuba. Calm waters and a beautiful day of bright sun and cooling breezes proved perfect for enjoying our day at sea, so much so that in the afternoon Captain Kostas set our two sails. Meanwhile, we filled our day with educational programs.

In the morning, our naturalist guide Deb Goodwin edified guests with a fascinating presentation on Cuban coastal ecosystems. This was followed by a presentation by our Cuban guide, Juan José Figueredo, entitled “Five Hundred Years of History.” José ended with an emotional plea for Lindblad guests to understand the affectionate feelings that a majority of Cubans retain towards Fidel and the Revolution.

After a superb buffet lunch at sea, photo instructor Jason Heilmann provided hands-on assistance as guests sought his knowledge. Later in the afternoon, as a Cuban specialist, I gave a presentation, “Cuban Society and Culture,” touching on ethnic and religious identities, cultural norms, popular past-times, education and health systems and more.

With our Cuban pilot aboard, we entered Bahía de Siguanea, off the southwest coast of Isla de la Juventud, where we anchored for the night. After dinner, we enjoyed the award-winning movie “Motorcycle Diaries” about Che Guevara’s and Alberto Granado’s famous motorcycle journey through South America in 1952.
