Our expedition around this magical place brought us today to one of my favorite locations in the Peruvian Upper Amazon: the Pacaya River. Very early in the morning, at around 06:00, we went as deep and as far into the Pacaya River as we could. This river is the farthest destination we will reach during this week’s expedition; remoteness and “expecting the unexpected” made this morning’s skiff exploration a very special one. Our three skiffs formed an explorers’ caravan in the Pacaya River. It was a relatively long morning, but filled with memorable sightings. We had the chance to swim in the middle of Yanacocha Lake as well.
In the late afternoon, we explored a riverbank on the Ucayali River. As the river levels are currently very low, large sandbanks are still seen everywhere. We had a great time walking along the beach and observing the Amazon from a very different perspective. A warm rain showered us, adding a magical ingredient to the experience. We had drinks and snacks under the rain, and some adventurous guests even covered their faces with the mineral-rich mud. We had a lot of fun.
