Today we sailed into the most remote part of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. The Pacaya River is surrounded by lush jungle, and we can find a vast diversity of wildlife.
We started the day at 6:30 a.m. to venture into the river. Pink river dolphins splashed in the convergence of the two rivers, where the white water meets the tannin rich black water. Blue and yellow macaws flew above us several times while we heard the loud voices of the horned screamers in the distance.
At 8:00 a.m. our local guides and hotel staff served breakfast turning our skiffs into "The Jungle Café"! While surrounded by wilderness, we enjoyed a full breakfast starting with fresh juice and fruit, several types of sandwiches, and finishing with coffee.
In the afternoon we returned into the Pacaya River, exploring much farther into the wilderness. We made our way to Yanayacu Lake to take a swim while many pink river dolphins appeared not far from us. We could hear the splashing and their breathing in almost every direction while we swam in the tannin-rich waters of the Yanayacu Lake.
After a refreshing Amazonian swim, we continued our exploration to find red howler monkeys, caymans, horned screamers, and even a glimpse of an Amazon manatee.
As we headed back to Delfin II, the sky turned bright pink and orange, delineating the trees in the horizon and lighting up the huge tropical clouds. We had another wonderful day of exploration and wildlife sighting in the upper Amazon.
