The guests aboard National Geographic Resolution spent the day in and around Stanley, Falkland Islands. This small city of 3,000 is the principal city and main port of the British territory.

Many of the guests visited a sheep farm, since this is the predominant industry of the Falklands. They met the owners of this family farm and observed sheep herding and shearing.

Most of us went on a bus tour of Stanley, which included government buildings, monuments, and the museum. We were surprised to learn that this area was the site of a famous World War I naval battle, as well as the center of the 1982 Falkland Islands War on land, air, and sea.

Others went on a long hike up Mt. Williams, where we walked through grasslands full of red diddle-dee berry bushes. Our local guide pointed out the long stone runs, which are rare linear piles of jagged stones created by freezing and thawing of the sandstone rocks.

Finally, most of us walked around the town to peruse the gift shops, visit distilleries, and enjoy some food and drinks. We viewed the old buildings and scenic waterfront that make this city so quaint.
