Today was the first of our destinations on our expedition around New Zealand, and we visited the historical site of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. These beautiful grounds and surrounding forest have huge cultural significance and are known as the birthplace of the nation.
We enjoyed learning about this location’s history, delivered by local guides, as we explored the grounds and observed the rich birdlife of the area. We were treated to a traditional Maori welcome at the Te Whare Rūnanga (meeting house) with cultural performances.
In the afternoon we enjoyed exploring the nearby historic town of Russell on this tranquil, sunny day.
