The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 8, 2017.

We awoke once more tied up alongside Cienfuegos, in the central part of Cuba, considered the rural heart of the country. This lively port town was founded in 1819, and named after the Cuban Governor General of the time, Jose Cienfuegos, in 1829. Like the rest of the country, this city is bursting with talented artists, with music and dancing everywhere.

One of their greatest sources of pride was the world-famous singer Benny Moré, who sang with a number of orchestras and after whom the Cienfuegans have named their yearly music festival. We spent the morning exploring the town, starting at the main town square, and visiting a fascinating farmers market and an important art school. After lunch in a restaurant in Punta Gorda, the aristocratic quarter of the city in the 1900s that lines the picturesque bay, we went further afield to learn about the history of the sugar plantations in the area or to visit the Soledad Botanical Gardens, which started off as a sugar cane research station and has since become one of the largest botanical gardens in Latin America.
