The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 8, 2017.

While many of us tend to think of Cuba as a single island, it is actually an archipelago made up of a main island and four minor archipelagos (totaling anything between about 1,200 and 4,000 islets and keys, depending on how one defines an islet and key!). Last night we anchored in the large bay named Ensenada de la Siguanea, off the coast of the largest island of the Canarreos Archipelago, and second largest island of all: Isla de la Juventud, named thus by Fidel Castro, who built schools and universities here and populated it with young people. It is also home to the “Presidio Modelo,” where, in October 1953, Fidel and the other organizers of the attacks on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago were imprisoned for over a year. This island was originally known as Isla de los Pinos, and in fact inhabitants are still referred to as Pineros. It knows relatively little tourism, and as such, during the day we spent exploring the island, we felt we were getting a taste of the “real” Cuba, with several authentic people-to-people experiences.
