The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on March 1, 2017.

Windy weather unsuitable for sailing offered the unexpected opportunity to visit Santa Clara, a gem of the Cuban heartland where sugar cane monoculture has transitioned to a blend of orchards, rice fields, and cattle ranches. Capital of Las Villas province, the town grew in population and prosperity in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad and sugar-associated industries. Che Guevara’s derailment of an armored troop train here and his seizure of the city in 1958 were important events in the struggle against Batista, equally highlights of our day.
